As part of Computer Science Education Week, we took part in an initiative called the ‘Hour of Code’ in which many people around the world dedicate an hour out of the week to learn computer coding.

We used the site Monster coding to give the children the opportunity to use function blocks to program.

They absolutely loved the challenge and overcoming the obstacles that they faced (photos to follow).

Lots of the children wanted to carry on at home so please feel free to use the link above.

Year 3 have been working so hard in maths recently. I thought it only fair to show you some of the fruits of their labour. Below are examples of the bar modelling they have been doing to solve word problems and the first part of the work they have been doing in their multiplication unit. Keep it upp Year 3!

Great maths website for learning about bar models

We have received some feedback about parents being, at times, unsure of the methods we use to tackle certain maths problems. In particular, the use of bar models in working out word problems. The link above is a really great site to play around with different bar models and understand how they can be used to visually represent word problems. The children have really made great progress in the way they are now understanding and using bar modelling effectively. It’s great to see!

Collaboration in literacy

I just wanted to share this video. I took it during literacy today because of the brilliant collaboration that went on between groups. There was a great buzz around the classroom with children working together to find different sentence types within a challenging piece of text. In the video, you see people helping each other out, reading for each other, sharing answers and challenging each other in a sensitive way. Great collaboration Year 3!

We were set the challenge of creating a circuit that allowed us to turn a light on and off. The children did really well experimenting with the different components.

French Day in 3V

On French Day, we started with our class assembly which included some of our French learning from last half term. We then did three different activities including using the iPads to create our own French puppet show. We drew pictures in the style of famous French artist Paul Gauguin and then the parents joined us for a spot of French bingo to practice animal names we had learned earlier whilst learning about ‘The Carnival of the Animals’. Thanks for coming everyone.
